There were cake and gifts, beautiful words, and lots of hugs and photos. Among those taking pictures was Sun-Sentinel photographer Carrie Warren, whose photographs will accompany an article on Hospice by the Sea’s involvement with the Matthew 25 Project, tentatively slated for publication Sunday, April 20.
On Thursday morning (April 3), employees gathered in the chapel for final thoughts and prayers for the team’s safe journey. Seven members of the spiritual staff – Revs. Fred Butler, Robert Hooker, Elsa Howard, Fred Mortensen, and Jerry Stephenson; Father Walter Coleman; and Rabbi Nathan Rose – shared their reflections. Paula read heartfelt letters from Judi Wood and Jerry Gotkin, then, in a most tender and loving gesture, gave each member of the team a pearl from her mother Genevieve’s rosary.
Following a light breakfast in the classrooms, the team’s bags were packed, and everyone climbed aboard the van to head out to the Miami airport. Paula, Karen Gause, Pam Lane, and Glenn Rogers traveled to the airport to see them off.
After a four-hour delay in New York, our team arrived in Accra, safely and soundly, at approximately 11:15 a.m., Ghana time, on Friday (April 4). Father Benson and his assistants, as well as our scout team, Judi and Silvia, were at the airport to greet them. They were all in great spirits, and already going out to make their first visit, to a clinic. In the afternoon, a welcoming ceremony and party was held in their honor.
